Dispel magic - potions too tough?

I always thought of potions as the weakest of magic items in many ways. It's the first magic item wizards can create. They're just liquids in a flask or bottle. And yet under the dispel magic description, they save at 12th level vs. dispel magic, whereas wands save at 6th level and staves at 8th.

I've always considered wands and staves as being a lot more permanent than potions (ie one shots). Ever since I first started gaming, I've wanted to reverse this. Is anyone seeing some logic to that, that I'm missing?

I never really had a problem with that, since Wands and Staves are only suppressed for a while. Potions are destroyed. (at least that's how we did it) As you said, Wands and Staves are more of a permanent thing, so Dispel Magic doesn't destroy those.

Hmmm. Good point! I wasn't considering the suppression vs. destruction aspect.

And for item saves, even if the container saves, the liquid inside can still get boiled off/frozen/spoiled.
