Wizard Lock question

Post by garhkal »

In the Glyph of warding spell, it says a priest who sets it, can put in a Password so folks can safely pass the spell.. BUT IN neither the PHB or Spells and magic, do i see anything in the write up, for the Wizard lock spell, saying IT can have a password for folks to safely open the Wizard locked door...

So who here DOES modify the WL spell in that manner???

I don't. I look at it like this. The priest spell glyph of warding is sort of like a blessing, since the spell is bestowed by the priest's god. The priest's role is a protector and proselytizer, so using this spell, he is sort of "protecting his flock". The priest gets to determine who shares in the miracles of his god.

Wizard lock is just a spell designed to lock doors. It's not meant as a protective spell, per se.

I hope that makes sense.

So if i changed the wording of the WL spell to
When cast the mage setting up the wizard lock has three options for 'whom gets to bypass it.
A) he can set it up as normal, where he's the only one.
B) he can designate ONE OTHER person, who's the only one.
or C) he can designate ONE SPECIFIC KEY, that can bypass it by safely unlocking the portal
Would that be giving WL too much?

No, not at all. I don't see any problem with doing that. It actually sorta makes sense for the spell to work that way. I've just never changed it myself because I didn't see a need to during any games we've played - it was never even thought of.

There's also the option of creating a new spell - maybe you'd call it shared wizard lock (ok, that does sound stupid  ), which would be a higher level spell and allow a shared use. It's an option, though to me that would be unnecessary work since it's far more efficient to simply tweak the spell the way you did, which I think works perfectly! But it is another option.

It was a question two of my players had, RE wizard lock, and wondering WHY unlike certain other protective spells of that nature (for homes etc), that it didn't have the option to key it so someone Else could also safely use it....

This esp makes sense eith novels where doors, barriers, etc are locked of warded and need a method to pass without destroying the protective measure. There are probably a lot of spells that need tweaking in various instances.
At the edge of madness, he will show no sadness
Never broken, he'll be back for more
Proven under fire, over trench and wire
No fear of death, he's unshakeable
Forged for the war, he's unbreakable

Thinking about it now, it does make more sense for wizard lock to have a password. If the wizard sends his apprentice to the library or lab to fetch some rare tome or something, it makes sense to have the door magically locked, so the apprentice would need a password.
