Rings of Returning??

Post by garhkal »

While typing out the Psionic power cards, for psionic abilities from Dragon kings (as i don't remember if those were in the deck of psionic powers or not), the psychokinetic power of "opposite reaction", sounded very similar to a magical ring, known as 'rings of returning'.. Where if YOU got struck by a magical attack, the ring activated and send BACK an attack at the initial caster.. BUT I CANNOT for the life of me, remember where that ring was, OR EVEN IF it was an existing ring, or one that someone made up on this site (Or some other site)..

Does anyone know what i am on about??

Wouldn't that be a ring of spell turning?

My thought as well unless there was a special card in the factory collector decks. The Encyclopedia magica abd magic encyclopedia and dragondex turns up nada.

Assuming rings of returning are not actually rings of spell turning, could this have been a magical item detailed somewhere in the Dark Sun materials (modules, etc)? I've never heard of it myself, but I don't have much Dark Sun material because I never got into it. But I'm guessing the ring might be contained somewhere in that setting, in a module or sourcebook.

Not sure where i remember it from.. It may have also been known as 'something' of retribution. Where when you made a spell save (NOT ONE just vs magical devices, BUT SPECIFICALLY FOR SPELLS) it sent back a magical attack AT The caster. BUT IF YOU failed said save (OR there was none to make), nothing happened...

Hmmm. Not ringing a bell off hand. I'm still wondering if it was a Dark Sun specific magic item. Maybe in a module? I think the Dark Sun stuff came out after the Magical Encyclopedias, didn't it? I can't remember. If so, that could be why it's not in the encyclopedia.

I didn't check netbooks. Those aren't legit items though.

I just thought of something. Could this have been a magic item posted on DF or something like that, a home-brewed magic item?

Well, i've not found anything.. So made something up.. Tell me what you think.

Ring of Retribution
This magical ring has similar properties to a Ring of spell turning, BUT it functions in an entirely different manner.

IF the wearer of the ring is DIRECTLY Targeted by a spell, AND he makes his save vs that spell, assuming it allowed one, it immediately sends a 'Retributive' energy bolt, right back to the initial caster, dealing 1d6 damage, +2hp per level of the spell that was targeted. So if an enemy mage, targeted a fireball directly on the wearer of this ring, and he made his save, the ring would strike HIM back for 1d6+6hp of damage.
If the spell dis allows a save, the save is failed, OR the wearer of the ring is just in the Blast radius (for AOE spells), and was NOT the direct target of that AOE spell, the ring does nothing.
It also won't work vs spell like effects from rods/staves/wands.
