Either that or the levels are so tricky they can defeat even good mapping skills. Even an archmage can get lost! :)

Oh, I'm probably old enough, I just never saw that show. Didn't watch a lot of TV other than Saturday morning cartoons.

I guess I'm not geeky enough, I recognized the book cover right away, but I don't know who that guy is or what makes it funny. :/

Nice details on the similarities and differences, more than I was willing to go into before :) They didn't mention removal of the Attacks of Opportunity except when trying to move away from a person without using Disengage, which I think is huge. It's possible to play 5E without a mat and miniatures...

I remember using Pixia way back, it's rather easy to use, the tutorial explained using layers very nicely. You should be able to layer a grid with it. Not nearly as powerful as Photoshop or Gimp, but VERY easy to use.

I don't know why, but I'd see similar stuff all the time, where they somehow think that rolling 2d4 vs 1d8 was a big deal. I always preferred the 1d8 because you had better odds of getting that max damage. But the authors seemed to think 2d4 was better. I think that's what's going on here. They don'...

Roll20.net

Very nice virtual tabletop, no software installation at all. I used to use OpenRPG for gaming with others online, but development stopped on it, plus getting the right mix of Python and wxPython made it a pain. Roll20.net works purely in the browser. I've played a couple of games in it, and discover...

You should be able to do it easily enough if you can just acquire the hex grid. GIMP can do it quite easily just by putting it into a layer. Changing a given color to transparent is trivial.

The key word is baseless, I'm sure he had some kind of base involved ;) It IS a fact that the strongest man is stronger than the strongest woman. Doesn't mean women can't be strong, but not as strong on the average. I can honestly say that never bothered me. There were other things far more botherso...

Pretty sure I never saw anything about it either. Hazarding a guess as to what it IS, I think it refers to jousting. I do remember the word list being involved with it, as you 'move up the lists' as you keep winning. But that is just a guess, I suspect you are correct about it just being a left over...

Favorite Edition (OD&D, Basic, 1E, 2E, etc) I had the most fun playing 1E, though 2E elements did enter as well. 2E made things too generic at first, though later they did make things more diverse. Favorite Class (any edition) That's a tough one for me, I love the spellfilcher (elf mage/thief c...

A negative level when it's applied, causes a lose of 5 hit points and reduces your level effectiveness. There is no XP loss at all. http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/special-abilities#TOC-Energy-Drain-and-Negative-Levels I like the way the negative levels weaken your character, but don't make th...

As Beowulf mentioned, the way it's done just doesn't make sense to me. I prefer the way (horrors!) that 3E and Pathfinder do it with negative levels. That's a form of debilitation that is there, but you don't have to recalc anything. It's nasty if you don't get it taken care of, since you are effect...

Pretty much the same sort of description is in the 2E version. The impression I get is that anyone with magic ability is more susceptible, only specialists in that area (ie illusionists) get to save, and dumb fighters, who can't use magic. Thieves get to use scrolls at higher levels, but fighters ca...

No, there never was such a thing in 1E. Mages were the only ones to have 8th or 9th level spells, all others stopped at 7th.

Keep in mind that Heal does FAR more than just heal injuries. It cures a LOT of conditions, including insanity. It's much more than just an improved Cure Wounds spell :)

When 2E came out, my game became a mix as well :) Personally, I am ok with demi-human level limits, Wish can be used to allow another level. Plus we didn't play to high level without someone using a Wish to become human or gain levels if they weren't human to begin with. I think part of the reason t...

Are you sure Raise Dead isn't 5th in 1E? (I can't locate my 1E PHB or DMG, it's ticking me off) In the OSRIC rules (based on 1E) it's 5th. I always thought it was that way in all editions. And yes, I'm fine with it being 5th and Heal being 6th. Raise Dead does have that -1 Con each time. (I think th...

Probably at the very high levels, the illusionist falls short, but in the middle levels, they can arguably be better for a few things. The Paralyzation spell, level 3, PERMANENT duration. (same with Blindness and Deafness, level 2) Summon Shadow, level 5, creates a lot of Shadows, along with all tha...

I would probably not let a black tentacle work, since it is formed out of magic, it's not a normal thing brought into being by magic. With grease, it's a substance you could find lying around, with entangle, the magic makes the vines and plants wrap around, but with the tentacles, you are creating s...

Look at the Shadow Monsters spells again, they do that lesser damage if the person MAKES a saving throw for the illusion. Most illusions do nothing if you make your save, those spells still do damage. and of course, they do FULL damage if the person doesn't successfully disbelieve the spell. (they h...
