The Back In Print Project FAQ

What is the Back In Print Project?

Back in 2000, Wizards of the Coast released the 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons game. At that point, all support for published material relating to Basic Dungeons & Dragons, 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, and 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons came to an end. However, each of these out of print (OOP) editions of Dungeons & Dragons has a large and loyal following who refused to give up playing the games they love merely because that edition became OOP. Unfortunately, no new material would be released for those editions by Wizards of the Coast.

A handful of enthusiastic old-school gamers decided not to let that be a setback and decided to produce their own new material for these OOP editions, which could be shared with friends online. And thus was born the Back In Print Project.

What sort of material is being worked on?

We're currently working on material for Basic Dungeons and Dragons, 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, and 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Most of the material for each edition will be generic material (ie not world-specific), while some of it will be specific to a particular campaign setting (ie The Ruins of Undermountain III: The Deadly Levels for the Forgotten Realms campaign setting).

We will be developing adventure modules, resource books, and accessory materials. All material will be released in .pdf format for ease of printing should the DM desire a hard copy of the material to reference at the game table. Most material will feature full color covers and all material will include high quality art and maps will be done by talented cartographers.

Is there any conversion involved? Is this d20 material?

Absolutely not! All material for the BIP Project will be designed specifically for one of the various OOP editions. For example, material released for use with 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons will use the same stats, terminology, and rules as presented in the 2nd Edition Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide. No conversion is needed and no d20 material will be included. The BIP Project is specifically for OOP editions and nothing else.

How much will the material cost?

Absolutely nothing. All material at the BIP website is totally free. All the material found at the BIP website is developed by fans of the game…enthusiastic and loyal fans who want to preserve the style of play associated with the various OOP editions of the game and share their material with other friends.

Can I contribute material to the website?

Certainly! We're always looking for good writers, artists, and cartographers to develop new material. Some people may only be able to contribute an original magic item or spell, while another may contribute an entire adventure. All submissions are welcome, whether large or small, and everyone will be credited for anything submitted. Keep in mind that submitting something to the BIP Project does not mean it will immediately be used or printed. Material will work its way into products as needed and as development allows. For more details, contact the webmaster or ask your question in the discussion forums.

Will I be paid for my work?

Yes. You will earn the respect and admiration of your fellow gamers and friends. You will earn the right to beam with pride as praise is heaped on you for your contributions. And finally, you will earn bragging rights to being part of an exciting, creative project that is working to keep the games you love alive.

What's that? You're asking about monetary compensation? Ah! Sorry, but that's very unlikely. This is after all a free fan project, and since we can't charge for the material, we can't afford to pay people for their contributions. It's a labor of love, nothing more, nothing less. The only possible exception is that some of the professional artists we have on staff who are doing full color covers may be paid for their work.
